Anna--the other Anna--informed her mother that she was going to the dance, and not coming back. This...did not go over well. Anna's mother said, "You will go to no dance," as she rose from her chair, stalking toward her daughter. "You will go nowhere in that disgusting dress. You wear white like a bride, but what man will take you after you let schoolboys lift your skirts?" Then she reared back, spat in Anna's face, and said, "Your father would be ashamed."

The other Anna didn't move at all. She was breathing quickly, but other than that she seemed completely calm. "Papa loved me," she said softly. "I do not know why you don't."

Beside Tony, Anna was...very much not right. She was quivering like a frightened deer, black veins crawling across her skin, her eyes filled with dirty water. "Please," she said in a horrible voice as the standoff between Anna and her mother continued, "please, we need to go."

Then Anna's mother laughed at Anna's insistence that she was leaving and said, "Elias. Take my daughter up to her room. Get her out of this dress."

Yeah. So this just kept getting worse.
