Dungeon Residential Camps, Somewhere, Saturday

And then the pathways slammed shut.

Oh, not all of them. Most of them simply rearranged themselves. But whatever had connected each camp to another had been violently stripped away. They were alone now, and they were easy prey. At least the winds had settled down...

The maze had grown more erratic, however. Instead of speeding up time for all, it was now slowing it down at random in different places. Anyone caught in a sudden bubble of it would find themselves slowing down compared to the rest of the world. Awkward.

Stiles appreciated the company. Or, rather, he appreciated knowing where Kitty was at all times. The thought of that made him frown. "My dad is going to freak out when he finds out I've gone missing."

"We'll be out of here soon enough," Kitty told him, because she was in that mode where that was just a thing that was Going To Happen Dammit. "You'll be able to call and tell him you're okay."

"He might drag me off and lock me in a tower somewhere," he said. "This is the second time I've gone missing in less than a year."

"Actually third, but he didn't know about the one kidnapping."

Kitty frowned a little. "No more kidnappings for a while," she said gently. "I can talk to him, if you want. We couldn't prevent this one at all."

"If you can try to word it so he doesn't know anything about the supernatural, sure," Stiles said, drawing his knees up to his chest and wrapping his arms around them. "He doesn't know anything about all that."

Talking about his issues with his dad meant that he wasn't thinking about Derek. Both situations sucked, but at least his dad was still alive somewhere.

"I can do that," she agreed. "I didn't tell my parents about any of that stuff, either. Pretty sure my mom still doesn't know."

"Do you think she knows that you're hiding something from her?" Stiles asked.

"She has to. But I also left home when I was thirteen and had to deal with the mutant stuff in a place that's famous for not being very kind to mutants. The fact that I kept to telling her how I was doing in school and dance class was probably a big sign I was withholding," Kitty admitted. "Do you tell him other stuff, besides the whole supernatural thing?"

"I don't want to worry him," Stiles said, shaking his head. "Being the sheriff of Beacon Hills comes with enough stress."

They did have a lot of murders for such a small town.

"I also thought not telling him would keep him safe somehow. Didn't really work," he said. "I can't protect anybody, turns out."

"I've been there," Kitty admitted. "You try, and that's the big thing. Sometimes there's only so much you can do."

"I could have done more," Stiles said, shaking his head. "I had the chance to be more, to be a werewolf, and I didn't take it. If I was stronger or faster maybe I could have helped Derek."

He completely forgot they were supposed to be talking about his father.

"Being a werewolf didn't help him," Kitty pointed out quietly. "You got out, you got here, and you're safe. You know that's what mattered to him."

"What about what mattered to me?" Stiles asked. "I wanted him alive. I could have died, I would be okay with that, but other people depended on him."

He couldn't help but wonder about what was going to happen to someone like Isaac now.

"And I wouldn't be okay with you dying," Kitty pointed out. "There's only so much you can do, Stiles. If I'd been with him, or Jack, or anyone else, the same thing probably would have happened."

Stiles didn't really agree with that---Kitty or Jack hadn't been there and they didn't see just how useless he really was in that situation, but he didn't want to argue. That way led to heart racing, which led to hyperventilating and Stiles did not want to start having panic attacks again.

No, a panic attack would not be good. He took in a deep breath and let it out slowly before resting his forehead on his knees. "I just miss him."

"I know," Kitty said, bringing her hand down to rub his back. "I miss him, too."
