Dungeon Residential Camps, Somewhere, Saturday

And then the pathways slammed shut.

Oh, not all of them. Most of them simply rearranged themselves. But whatever had connected each camp to another had been violently stripped away. They were alone now, and they were easy prey. At least the winds had settled down...

The maze had grown more erratic, however. Instead of speeding up time for all, it was now slowing it down at random in different places. Anyone caught in a sudden bubble of it would find themselves slowing down compared to the rest of the world. Awkward.

Bay had been trying to make some scavenged stale bread a little less disgusting by toasting it when she accidentally dropped it into the fire. It hit at an odd angle, making the flames flare up alarmingly. Bay swore as she dumped what was left in her cup of water into the flames, which had the unanticipated side effect of dousing the fire entirely.

"I meant to do that," she muttered, and reached down to poke around the fire in hopes of stirring the embers back to life. She realized as she did that there was a lot more space than there should have been: Enough space, in fact, for a small glimmer of metal to be completely separate from the still-hot ashes.

She reached toward the glimmer curiously and brought the metal in for a good look. It was a tiny figure of an alot, not unlike the figurines that lined the mantle. This one, though, was holding a cluster of keys.

Huh. Bay had heard the rumors about people finding keys in the fireplaces, but she wasn't sure how that would even work. But the alot was pretty and the days in the dungeon had taught her not to let go of anything easily. She pocketed the alot figure, then raised her voice.

"Guys? I might have found something...."

At this point, Jaina was so happy to hear those words and not have it followed by a near-death experience.

"What is it?"

Bay held up the figurine. "One of those island mutant yak things holding keys," she said. "It could just have fallen in from the mantle, but aren't people supposed to be looking for keys in the fireplaces?"

"Strangely literal, but I like it," Jaina decided, and looked at the mantle. "If these are new, I don't think that one just fell in, either."

"I don't really think that either," Bay confided, delicately petting the alot with a fingertip. "Just didn't want to get all excited if it's nothing, you know?"

"I have no idea what it might actually mean," she admitted, "but I can let the other groups know when I go out."

Because, of course, she thought she'd see other groups.

"Thanks," Bay said. "I haven't been going out all that often. There was this ... zombie incident and I realized I'm really not built to fight monsters. Which somehow never seemed like a liability until now."

She held up the alot. "Any idea what I should do with this now?"

"Honestly? Not yet," Jaina said. "I'm going to take a guess and say it has something to do with that vault, but other than that..."

The fact that there were at least three of these things made the answer a little less straightforward to her.

"Maybe there's a teeny tiny keyhole on the vault that one of these fits?" Bay suggested, poking at her alot's keys. "I'll hold onto it for now. Sooner or later we'll figure it out."
