Dungeon Residential Camps, Somewhere, Saturday

And then the pathways slammed shut.

Oh, not all of them. Most of them simply rearranged themselves. But whatever had connected each camp to another had been violently stripped away. They were alone now, and they were easy prey. At least the winds had settled down...

The maze had grown more erratic, however. Instead of speeding up time for all, it was now slowing it down at random in different places. Anyone caught in a sudden bubble of it would find themselves slowing down compared to the rest of the world. Awkward.

"Where did that come from?"

She actually assumed that if this was a power Jessica had always had, she definitely would have heard about it before.

"One of the doors yesterday had a place with giant turtles and glowing flowers," Jessica said. "Touch the flower, get the ability to shoot fire webs. Because I've never been able to do either of those things before. Wink wink, nudge nudge."

Hopefully Sia could break that code. Oh, secret identities.

"Right, of course you couldn't," Sia said, what with her masterful secret code breaking. "At least the camp can't accidentally be burned down..."

"Hey now. I'm extremely responsible with my powers," Jessica said. "Please note how I'm testing them out to figure out how exactly they work in the one thing that's already on fire."

"All right, point," Sia conceded. "So how exactly do they work?"

"I pretty much just think of throwing a fireball and then boom," Jessica said, throwing one into the fire the normal, boring way. "But apparently I have a pretty generous definition of 'throwing,' or whatever causes the fire has a nasty reaction to the glands that produce my webs or something. Because if I shoot a web, it's instantly ablaze."

"So you can't shoot a regular web at all?" Sia checked.

"No. And even if I could, I wouldn't trust it too much. They're dissolving fast, maybe because of, you know, being on fire. But there's at least a chance there's a been a change to the chemical composition of the webs," Jessica explained. "If I had a lab to run some tests, I could know for sure. But the best I have right now is a fireplace."

"I suppose it'd be too lucky for one of today's doors to lead to a lab," Sia said. "And to not be attacked there anyway."

"I'm not going to hold out hope for either of those," Jessica said. "But if it doesn't wear off once all this is over, I know people back in New York who should be able to help. They're kind of experts in the field of biological changes resulting in fire powers. And in the meantime, I'm not going to say no to an offensive weapon while we're here."
