And then the pathways slammed shut.

Oh, not all of them. Most of them simply rearranged themselves. But whatever had connected each camp to another had been violently stripped away. They were alone now, and they were easy prey. At least the winds had settled down...

The maze had grown more erratic, however. Instead of speeding up time for all, it was now slowing it down at random in different places. Anyone caught in a sudden bubble of it would find themselves slowing down compared to the rest of the world. Awkward.

"It is important that you consume something, to absorb nutrients," Liara said. All right, lecturing a traumatized human might not be the smartest thing to do, but this was hardly her field.

She put the apple down in front of Savannah anyhow.

Savannah wasn't so broken, yet, that she would be mean to someone being nice, so she picked up the apple.

"She's gone," she said by way of explanation.

"Angela," Savannah whispered.

"Ah." Liara regarded Savannah's expression for a moment. "She was one of the older girls."

Savannah nodded. "She was more than my best friend."

She hoped she was not drawing the wrong conclusions. Humans were sometimes vague.

Liara reached over to put her hand on Savannah's shoulder. She wasn't completely sure what else to do. "I'm sorry," she repeated. "But you do need to eat."
