Dungeon Residential Camps, Somewhere, Saturday

And then the pathways slammed shut.

Oh, not all of them. Most of them simply rearranged themselves. But whatever had connected each camp to another had been violently stripped away. They were alone now, and they were easy prey. At least the winds had settled down...

The maze had grown more erratic, however. Instead of speeding up time for all, it was now slowing it down at random in different places. Anyone caught in a sudden bubble of it would find themselves slowing down compared to the rest of the world. Awkward.

"Thanks," Stiles said, although he didn't seem to thrilled about it. "Derek was a good guy. I know it didn't seem that way, but he was."

"I know he was nicer to you than it seemed sometimes," Clint said, only slightly reluctantly. "And he didn't let you get hurt, which is a point in his favor too."

"Yeah everybody keeps saying that," he said. "I kind of wish people wouldn't protect me if it leads to stuff like this happening."

"No one likes being the person others worry about, I know," Clint said with a sigh. "But it would have been worse to lose both of you."

"Why would people worry about you?" Stiles asked. "You seem pretty capable to me."

"I'm totally capable, and I'm glad you think that," Clint said. "But I've also been ponying around with people a lot stronger than me and... well, let's just say I've been the weak link before."

"Some of the scariest people back home are the ones without powers," Stiles said. "My friend Allison is more skilled than my friend Scott and she's the human of the two of them."

"I'd like to think I'm--well, not scary, but useful," Clint said. "That's why I've been teaching my class. People with powers tend to rely on them too much, but human skills don't go away as easily."

"I probably should have been paying closer attention, huh?" He didn't really think he had any marketable skills.

"Nah, you're still figuring out what you're good at, right?" Clint said, determined to make it sound like there was something out there for Stiles. "You'll come up with something that makes you awesome."

"I hope I find something more awesome than research guy," he said. "That doesn't really help anything in a fight."

"Hey, you were helping Kitty with... something last night, right?" Because she was awesome with distraction techniques. "I'm sure that helped."

"A little." Kept him from crying, anyway. "She's been really nice."

He was reminded of Scott after his mother died. Only Kitty actually seemed to have had practice at the whole comforting thing.
