Dungeon Residential Camps, Somewhere, Saturday

And then the pathways slammed shut.

Oh, not all of them. Most of them simply rearranged themselves. But whatever had connected each camp to another had been violently stripped away. They were alone now, and they were easy prey. At least the winds had settled down...

The maze had grown more erratic, however. Instead of speeding up time for all, it was now slowing it down at random in different places. Anyone caught in a sudden bubble of it would find themselves slowing down compared to the rest of the world. Awkward.

"You asked for good news. I didn't have any," she explained with a shrug of her shoulder. "And I'm sorry about Derek. I know you were friends."

"He was the only person I knew who had the first clue about how to be what I am," Jack said sourly. "And dying here, like this -- it's not fair to him. I should have been there to help him."

Allie thought about what it would have been like if she'd been turned and hadn't had Kanin there to guide and teach her. It wasn't something she liked thinking about.

"Maybe. Or maybe we'd be mourning you as well. You don't know."

Jack gave her a thin smile. "It's not as if I'm doing much to earn my keep," he said. "Maybe this is whats going to happen to us. We'll get picked off one by one until there's nothing."

Nudging the sword at her side, Allie shook her head. "I'm going to put up one hell of a fight before that happens. And don't worry about doing your part, you've been doing as much as anyone. It's not your fault there's not all that much to find."

"I've never wanted to die," Jack countered. "But if there's no way out, if we're just trapped here -- I'd rather go down fighting than starve."

"I don't think anyone does. It's why, when given a choice, even though I hate everything the vampires have done to my world, I still let Kanin turn me," Allie replied. "I still wanted to live. Even if it meant being one of them."

"But you're right. Fighting is better then just waiting to die."

Jack looked over, a spark of interest in his eyes. "Would you do it again?" he asked. "If you knew it would end up -- well, here?"

Her answer was immediate and certain. "Absolutely. If I hadn't agreed to be turned, I'd be nothing but bones scattered in the ruins by now. I never would have left the city, never would have found the island if I hadn't."

"I'm glad," Jack said, honestly. "I'm having a hard time remembering the good things right now. It's good you can."

"Well compared to everything before? For me this is still isn't that bad," she admitted. "But I know not the case for almost everyone else."

Allie hesitated for a moment, but did continue. "I am worried it's going to get worse though. And if that happens, if you're willing to do it, I'm going to need your help."

She was going to be so sorry for asking when this was over.

"Don't let me hurt anyone. In another day or two I'm going to start getting hungry," Allie explained quietly. "I'll be able to control it for a little while, but after while instinct will take over." She couldn't help remembering Bethany and Caleb curled trustingly into her side sleeping in the barn. Leaning forward, her fangs slipping out...and only a last bit of stubbornness keeping her from biting either of the sleeping children.

"We could block you from camp and see what happens to you in the dungeon," Jack suggested. "You might even find someone you don't need to feel guilty about eating."

"That'll only work so long. And if I get hurt, I'll only get hungrier. That's not good." It was hard to put into words, that mindless hunger where all that mattered was the taste of warm blood on your tongue. "You'll have to stop me. Permanentally. Before it gets to that point.

Jack glanced over, hurt in his cold eyes. "I will," he said. "But why me?"

"Because right now, in this room, you're one of the only people I think is strong enough to do it," Allie said, regretfully. "There are two vampire slayers in the other camp. I'm sure they'd do it with a smile. But they're not here right and I don't if we'll see them again."

Jack glanced at Kaidan for a moment, but he suspected he'd make a better vampire slayer than the biotic. And while he didn't want to kill Allie, it was far better than the alternative she was sketching out.

"You have my word," he said seriously. "But I hope it doesn't come to that."

Allie didn't want to die. But if given a choice between that, or hurting people she cared about, it's wasn't that hard to decide.
