You were right the first time, Tony. Especially if you actually looked at the girl beside you, whose skin was now dead-white, her dress red and dripping with blood, her inhuman eyes locked on the scene in front of her.
The memory of Anna tried to flee as Elias started toward her, but he caught her by the arm as her mother looked on with an expression of pleased hatred on her face. She slammed her head into his nose--not hard enough to break it, but hard enough that he let go and she fled toward the back of the house.
"You will not leave this house!" her mother shrieked, chasing after her and grabbing Anna by the hair. "You will never, never leave this house!"
"I will!" Anna shouted, managing to escape her mother only to be confronted with Elias again. As they struggled, her mother went...somewhere. Anna smashed a ceramic pitcher against Elias' head, and he tackled her to the floor in the foyer, hanging on to the backs of her legs as she struggled to get away.
And then Anna's mother came back with the kitchen knife and Anna, the real Anna, the horrible Anna, screamed, "NO!"
Even though it was useless. This had already happened.
The girl in the white dress screamed until she couldn't any more, and the girl in the red dress watched, tears of black water rolling down her face.
