Dungeon Residential Camps, Somewhere, Saturday

And then the pathways slammed shut.

Oh, not all of them. Most of them simply rearranged themselves. But whatever had connected each camp to another had been violently stripped away. They were alone now, and they were easy prey. At least the winds had settled down...

The maze had grown more erratic, however. Instead of speeding up time for all, it was now slowing it down at random in different places. Anyone caught in a sudden bubble of it would find themselves slowing down compared to the rest of the world. Awkward.

Priestly's legs tried to decide they were done only a few feet through the door to the camp, but he managed to stagger the rest of the way over to the fireplace. He felt a little silly about that -- there was an arrow in his shoulder, not his leg -- but panic and pain took a lot out of a guy.

And, you know, arrows. He really wasn't a fan of arrows.

"There!" he said, trying to smile reassuringly at Dinah. "See? Made it back just fine."

Just don't ask him to go anywhere else, today.

"Yay." That wanted to be more enthusiastic, but Dinah was trying to hide to hard her fear to put more oomph into it. "'kay, gimme two seconds, I'll be back with some water, and some more clothes, and..." And what? "We'll see what's up."

"I'm good," Priestly said. "Take your time."

He wasn't dead yet. He was already impressed with himself.

Socks. There were lots of socks with little balloons and crap on them, okay. That would work. Getting one wet, Dinah went back over to the fireplace, keeping her face calm with a major effort. Okay, Priestly wasn't coughing up blood, or shivering, or anything that meant this was life-threatening this minute, so...

"I'm gonna rip part of the blanket here. So I can ease off around the arrow. That okay?" she asked, kneeling next to him.

"Yeah," Priestly said. "I haven't really bonded with it yet. We're just acquaintances."

Dinah's giggle was kind of hysterical, but she managed not to let it get away from her completely. "Right. Time to break up." Very, very carefully, she ripped around the area-- harder to do than she expected. Then tried to ease it off without moving the arrow at all. "Sorry sorry sorry sorry," she whispered.

Priestly gritted his teeth, the raccoon ears still flat back against his head. His tail thumped on the floor, but he managed to keep quiet.

"I'm good," he said again. "It's okay. I'm good."

Reassuring Dinah kept his mind off of the whole "I got shot with arrows again" thing.

"You tell me if something hurts," Dinah insisted. "'Cause.. we can't make this worse." Okay, the arrow had torn through the jacket and had pinned the fabric through to his shoulder. Dinah bit her lip, then leaned forward, checking his front. "Uh. Okay, so. It didn't go through. It's stuck." She bit her lip, hard. "I think, maybe. We should leave it in."

Priestly turned his head to try to look and hissed as the movement pulled a little at the wound. "I'm gonna be a pin cushion?"

Internally, Dinah was flailing, and yelling for anyone with more medical expertise to show up, already. Externally, she took a breath and said, "Just the one. Pin." She steadied her voice. "I know that you're supposed to push these through if they go through the shoulder, but this one didn't. I don't want to mess up the muscle worse." She stared at the jacket, trying to think how to get it free of the wound. "Hang on. There were some dinner knives that we scavenged along with that place setting, the first day we got here..."

She darted off, finding a fork, and a knife, and then rushed back. "Okay, right. Um. Ripping out a seam? Or two? On this jacket. Might be we can work it off from there."

Priestly nodded, a little sad to lose the jacket -- he did not really want to be stuck in pink maternity wear, there'd be no shock value to it in here, so he'd just end up feeling awkward -- but well aware that this was one of those situations where you did what you had to do and shut up about it.

"Okay. Want me to help?" He held up his other hand, wiggling the fingers. "I think I can use this one."

Dinah frowned, then handed him the fork. "Rip at the seams on the arm, under your armpit. I'll try to cut the seams on the shoulder." Maybe they could pin this together, after they got it off him? Or something?

She took a breath, put one hand on his neck to steady herself, and started to saw at the top of the jacket. Sorry Priestly sorry sorry God don't let this hurt too much..

If they were home in the comfort of his apartment -- well, if they were home, they wouldn't have to do any of this at all -- he would probably be bitching and moaning about how much this hurt. Here, in this dank room in a dank dungeon where people were being attacked and disappearing, he bit his lip and sucked air through his teeth and promised himself a good freak-out-and-cry later.

The fork was awkward as hell, and he managed to jab himself in the armpit more often than not, but he managed to start pulling the seam open.

Dinah managed to peel apart the top part of the jacket from the lining, then started ripping at the thinner material. "Okay. Let's see. Maybe..." She looked over at his left arm. "Can you manage to get this off your other arm now? Maybe?" Maybe this would make good bandage material instead?

She was so taking another First Aid course when she got home. Maybe a paramedic course, yeah, that would be good.

Priestly hacked through the last bit of cloth under his arm and then started sliding it down. "I think so. I think I'm okay as long as I only move it from the elbow down."

"Okay" being a relative term.

"If you hold the, uh -- pinned bit still, I can probably get my other arm out, too."

"Nooooo," Dinah objected. "We're taking that sleeve off. And cutting down the inside if we have to. I don't want you moving that!" Her voice softened a little. "Please." She looked at the arrow, and said, as calmly as she could, "I think, maybe, I can pull this off the arrow, if I break off the feathers." But how much that would jar and hurt she couldn't imagine. "I'd have to saw through it first, though."

Momoko had broken off the ends of the arrows last time, but Priestly didn't actually remember that bit -- he was more than halfway out of the world by that point. So he had no idea, either. "Okay." He wrapped his good hand around his bicep on the arrow side. "Do it."

Dinah gulped, then used the knife to saw a notch in the shaft, as far down as she dared. Notched it from the other side. Whispered, "Hold still. Three, two--" And snapped it as fast as she could, making the arrow jerk in the wound, tears pricking her eyes in sympathy. "Sorry. I couldn't- sorry."

The fact that the sawing wasn't any fun -- holy crap, he could practically feel it vibrating in his shoulder -- let Priestly know in no uncertain terms that the snapping it would be worse.

"Nngghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" At least it was easier to strangle down a scream when your teeth were already clenched. He panted through his nose, gone white as a sheet. He really wanted to reassure Dinah, but, uh. That would take a moment, here.

Re: Camp Two - Fireplace

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2013-04-14 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm done I'm done!" Dinah felt sick, but that had to be nothing next to Priestly's reaction. She grabbed the cup of water she had, and scooted around him to hold it up to his mouth. "C'mon. Drink some. That part's done." The top layer of the coat would be easy to thread over the top of the arrow; it was the silk underlayer that looked like it got embedded in the tip of the wound. But that could wait a few minutes. Priestly looked way too pale. She held his good hand in hers, waiting. "You're being really, really brave about this."

Priestly hissed through his teeth again, still trying to get his breath back, then took a small sip of the water. He tried to say that he was okay, but his jaw didn't want to unclench yet. He took a couple more quick breaths, nostrils flairing.

"D-don' do that again," he managed. "That sucked."

"I won't have to," Dinah promised. Later, she could cry about this. Not now, though. "It's still sticking up. But. I can get the top part of the jacket off. Rip the bottom part around it." She squeezed his hand, hard. "And when we get out of here--" And they would, damnit, they had to, "We'll give you all the good drugs and a really soft couch and I'll wear a stupid little nurse's hat, I swear."

[personal profile] lovemykilt 2013-04-14 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
"I may hold you to that," Priestly said, managing a weak smile. "Hey, maybe we'll luck out and we'll all magically reset and be totally fine."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2013-04-14 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Wouldn't that be great?" Dinah smiled back, watching his face. When he had a little color back, she said, "Ready for me to get the jacket off?" The shoulder being ripped out, and the arm, made this part simpler, she hoped.

Not even remotely. "Yeah. Let's get this over with." So he could hide in an alcove and freak out.
