And then the pathways slammed shut.

Oh, not all of them. Most of them simply rearranged themselves. But whatever had connected each camp to another had been violently stripped away. They were alone now, and they were easy prey. At least the winds had settled down...

The maze had grown more erratic, however. Instead of speeding up time for all, it was now slowing it down at random in different places. Anyone caught in a sudden bubble of it would find themselves slowing down compared to the rest of the world. Awkward.

If they were home in the comfort of his apartment -- well, if they were home, they wouldn't have to do any of this at all -- he would probably be bitching and moaning about how much this hurt. Here, in this dank room in a dank dungeon where people were being attacked and disappearing, he bit his lip and sucked air through his teeth and promised himself a good freak-out-and-cry later.

The fork was awkward as hell, and he managed to jab himself in the armpit more often than not, but he managed to start pulling the seam open.

Dinah managed to peel apart the top part of the jacket from the lining, then started ripping at the thinner material. "Okay. Let's see. Maybe..." She looked over at his left arm. "Can you manage to get this off your other arm now? Maybe?" Maybe this would make good bandage material instead?

She was so taking another First Aid course when she got home. Maybe a paramedic course, yeah, that would be good.

Priestly hacked through the last bit of cloth under his arm and then started sliding it down. "I think so. I think I'm okay as long as I only move it from the elbow down."

"Okay" being a relative term.

"If you hold the, uh -- pinned bit still, I can probably get my other arm out, too."

"Nooooo," Dinah objected. "We're taking that sleeve off. And cutting down the inside if we have to. I don't want you moving that!" Her voice softened a little. "Please." She looked at the arrow, and said, as calmly as she could, "I think, maybe, I can pull this off the arrow, if I break off the feathers." But how much that would jar and hurt she couldn't imagine. "I'd have to saw through it first, though."

Momoko had broken off the ends of the arrows last time, but Priestly didn't actually remember that bit -- he was more than halfway out of the world by that point. So he had no idea, either. "Okay." He wrapped his good hand around his bicep on the arrow side. "Do it."

Dinah gulped, then used the knife to saw a notch in the shaft, as far down as she dared. Notched it from the other side. Whispered, "Hold still. Three, two--" And snapped it as fast as she could, making the arrow jerk in the wound, tears pricking her eyes in sympathy. "Sorry. I couldn't- sorry."

The fact that the sawing wasn't any fun -- holy crap, he could practically feel it vibrating in his shoulder -- let Priestly know in no uncertain terms that the snapping it would be worse.

"Nngghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" At least it was easier to strangle down a scream when your teeth were already clenched. He panted through his nose, gone white as a sheet. He really wanted to reassure Dinah, but, uh. That would take a moment, here.

"I'm done I'm done!" Dinah felt sick, but that had to be nothing next to Priestly's reaction. She grabbed the cup of water she had, and scooted around him to hold it up to his mouth. "C'mon. Drink some. That part's done." The top layer of the coat would be easy to thread over the top of the arrow; it was the silk underlayer that looked like it got embedded in the tip of the wound. But that could wait a few minutes. Priestly looked way too pale. She held his good hand in hers, waiting. "You're being really, really brave about this."

Priestly hissed through his teeth again, still trying to get his breath back, then took a small sip of the water. He tried to say that he was okay, but his jaw didn't want to unclench yet. He took a couple more quick breaths, nostrils flairing.

"D-don' do that again," he managed. "That sucked."

"I won't have to," Dinah promised. Later, she could cry about this. Not now, though. "It's still sticking up. But. I can get the top part of the jacket off. Rip the bottom part around it." She squeezed his hand, hard. "And when we get out of here--" And they would, damnit, they had to, "We'll give you all the good drugs and a really soft couch and I'll wear a stupid little nurse's hat, I swear."

"I may hold you to that," Priestly said, managing a weak smile. "Hey, maybe we'll luck out and we'll all magically reset and be totally fine."

"Wouldn't that be great?" Dinah smiled back, watching his face. When he had a little color back, she said, "Ready for me to get the jacket off?" The shoulder being ripped out, and the arm, made this part simpler, she hoped.

Not even remotely. "Yeah. Let's get this over with." So he could hide in an alcove and freak out.

Yeah, Dinah wouldn't be letting him get far without her. She moved over behind him, talking as she took the jacket off, voice low. "The top's torn out, I'm going to leave some of the lining there... plus maybe it's silk, I remember something about how that's good, it keeps knives and arrows from going in too far, and it's probably absorbing some of the blood..." Just a steady patter as she lifted the top layer of coat off the arrow, then set her teeth and ripped around the arrow with the fork, shredding the silk-nylon-whatever-it-was into a ragged circle around the shaft. Sloooooowly pulling the remains of the jacket down and off his shoulder. "There." She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and said, "I'm gonna pack these socks around it, so it doesn't move. Okay?" After she wiped off the blood that had dripped down his back. God.

Priestly nodded, not really trusting himself to talk, anymore. The adrenaline of it all was well and truly gone, and now he was mostly just exhausted and feeling slightly sick.

Later, he'd find someone to give her a proper bear hug for him, since his arm was out of commission for at least a little while.

As gently as she could, Dinah wiped off the blood, hissing through her teeth when the wound bled a little, but choking back another 'sorry' as inadequate. One sock, two, tied tight around what was left of the shaft, padding it so it wouldn't get knocked around easily, and soak up any new blood.

"Done. Really done." Dinah felt like falling down right there, but she crawled around to check on Priestly, pulling another too-big and ridiculous blue shirt with her. "I want to put your arm in this, tie the sleeves around your neck. To try to keep your shoulder from moving, okay?"

Priestly nodded. "Okay. Then come over here and sit down so I can hug you, okay?" He was pretty sure she looked worse than he probably did. (It wasn't true, what with the arrow and all, but he liked to think it was.)

That giggle was almost a sob. Dinah nodded hard, and carefully manipulated his arm into the sling, blinking. Tying it. And.. nothing more to do. No tears. It was just tiredness. That was all. Just... getting her defenses down. She reached up to smooth Priestly's hair, and pat one ear gently, then slumped, her forehead against his. "So I guess this is payback for jumping off an overpass, hunh."

"You didn't even have the excuse of trying to get food and supplies," Priestly pointed out. He reached up with his good arm to rub the back of her neck. "Also, climbing tall buildings, fighting bad guys on top of trains, getting kidnapped by supervillains. . . ."

"I am really, really sorry for all that at this moment. Not that I enjoyed parts of that." Well, the kidnapping, anyway. Dinah let out a shaky breath against Priestly's face. He had to be ten times as tired as she was, and he was trying to make her feel better? "C'mon. Let's find a place for you to sack out."

It was what he did.

"Right. Moving." Others would need the fire. He had a Dinah -- and two medieval blankets -- to keep him warm.
