Twisting Paths of the Dungeon, Somewhere, Thursday

The pathways of the dungeon had changed overnight. Anyone who had stayed in a room beyond their welcome had found themselves booted out back onto the hallways that belonged to their camp and feeling pressed down by the sudden increase in gravity. The doors of yesterday had closed. Other doors had now opened.

And other routes.

Anakin's stun baton experiment had proved unsuccessful, but at least he had . . . well, a baton. And he was going to go out and find something helpful today, he'd made up his mind, and no one was going to talk him out of it.

He was careful to stick to the lighted areas, at least.

Jaina was still on the hunt for supplies and weapons, and to be honest she'd get bored if she sat around camp all day anyway. At least fighting things that wanted her dead made her feel like she was doing something. And as she got further down the tunnel...

"Anakin?"

"Jaina?" The relief in Anakin's voice was evident. "There you are! I didn't see you at our camp, and I couldn't even sense you, and . . ."

Never mind being an apprentice Jedi Knight and expected to be capable. Right now he was just a kid who was really glad to see his sister, and reaching out to hug her.

"I didn't even think you were here!" she said, hugging him back. "Are you okay? There are other people?"

"I didn't know where you were, either, and yeah, there's around twenty of us," Anakin confirmed. "You?"

"About the same. Have you guys figured anything out yet?" Because she liked knowing what was going on so she could fix it.

They had that in common, which was why Anakin looked mildly annoyed when he shook his head. "Nothing groundbreaking. Things keep changing, but no idea why, or who's behind it."

"Yeah. There's been nothing to really do except make supply runs and not get killed by anything."

Which was something she was used to and could keep going at for a while. Thanks, years of wartime!

Whereas Anakin, who didn't have all that experience, mostly wanted to climb the walls. (Metaphorically. Actually climbing the walls seemed rather pointless.)

"Which is harder than it sounds, since it seems like every kriffing room in this place wants to try and kill us."

Though come to think of it, she didn't remember seeing Josh taking names today.

"Isn't it?" asked Anakin. "I think there might be a few faces missing from our group over the last couple of days."

Not that he liked to think about it much. He'd also probably blame himself, but he usually did that.

"Yeah, I just thought of at least one from my group," Jaina admitted. "There has to be a better way of keeping tabs on people."

"One that doesn't rely on hoping we find a datapad or something in one of these rooms?" Anakin asked wryly. "I'm going to guess there's at least one other group out there. The past couple of days I've noticed people that definitely haven't been with us."

"Then I hope there's another group," Jaina said. "Though I haven't seen any sign of one. Which is obviously what whoever's doing this wants."

Anakin nodded, tapping a finger against his jaw. "Do you think it's an attempt to keep us all disoriented somehow? That could explain why the paths keep changing."

"Possible. Especially when they're running us down by making us forage for things like food while running for our lives. It takes its toll eventually."

Anakin's frown deepened. "Like the gravity. This is fiendishly clever."

"I'd rather not compliment the obviously crazy person," Jaina said.

"I never said it was nice," protested Anakin. "Or even advisable."

Anakin couldn't help laughing. "I knew I was missing something: getting a lecture from you. Now this adventure is complete."

"No, a lecture would involve me telling you to not go through any door that's obviously going to lead to bad things or to make sure there's always something that can be used as a weapon." She paused. "So, now it's a lecture."

"Oh, good. Now it's really complete." Anakin looked down at the baton in his hand and sighed. "I could use a better weapon, but how many of the doors that lead to bad things in here have been obvious ones so far? Besides, what if those are the ones where I have the best chance of getting a better weapon?"

"Like the door that smelled like dead things? Skip stuff like that," she clarified. "Just be careful, is what I'm saying."

She'd be more emphatic about this in a few hours.
