Twisting Paths of the Dungeon, Somewhere, Thursday

The pathways of the dungeon had changed overnight. Anyone who had stayed in a room beyond their welcome had found themselves booted out back onto the hallways that belonged to their camp and feeling pressed down by the sudden increase in gravity. The doors of yesterday had closed. Other doors had now opened.

And other routes.

"Force," breathed Anakin, who'd gone a little pale at the sight of that many Sith, since he'd never even thought something like that was possible.

He found himself watching the man giving the orders; he couldn't quite place what it was, but something about him had captured Anakin's attention.

He'd helped evacuate several planets before the Yuuzhan Vong arrived, and this scene was not all that different in spirit. He had a bad feeling he knew where this was going.

A slighter, beardless version of Cade, barefoot, dressed only in sleep clothes--the ambush had come at night--came running toward the man, pointing at the ship and saying that the rest of the apprentices were ready and they should all prepare to take off now.

The man took his attention from the Sith temporarily, letting another Master, a male Zabrak, take charge of the battle.

"I'm here, Father," Cade was saying, igniting his lightsaber. "You don't fight alone!"

"NO!" the man shouted.

"Karking idiot," the present day Cade muttered, not sure if he was talking about his father or his younger self.

Father? And a lightsaber? Anakin looked from the vision to Cade, his eyes going wide.

Cade father all but shoved him onto the ship before turning to the Sith. "I am Kol Skywalker, servant of the living Force! None of you will pass!"

"Yeah," Cade whispered brokenly as the scene faded. "That wasn't true."

Wait, Skywalker? Sorry, Cade, but Anakin really couldn't help staring now.

At least he managed to find his voice again. "What happened?" he asked, barely above a whisper himself. "To the planet, I mean."

"They overran it," Cade said. "It was the end of the war, and the Jedi. Massacre at Ossus. The apprentices scattered to the universe and the Sith took Coruscant."

It's why Cade didn't talk about it.

Yeah, Anakin could see why.

"The Order -- gone?"

He sounded a bit horrified about that, but then in his defense, they'd barely gotten it re-established in his time.

"Wiped out," Cade said, nodding. "Sorry."

"Stang." Anakin really hoped he didn't look as queasy as he felt (which had nothing to do with the sudden, unexpected discovery that he was some kind of great-uncle). "This is why, isn't it? Why you never tell people your last name?"

He didn't mean for that to sound accusatory; he'd just had a lot to process in the last few minutes.

"There's only one person in the galaxy that knows I'm alive, and he's the one who sent me here," Cade said. "So...yeah."

Anakin huffed something that would have been a laugh if it didn't sound almost bitter. "I guess it really does run in the family, having all that weight attached to your name," he said, more sympathetic than anything.

Cade nodded. "Imagine how thrilled I was to get here and see the place infested with relatives."

"You make us sound like womp rats," Anakin said, half-jokingly. "We're not that bad."

Not that he didn't question some of Cade's life choices.

"Maybe not," Cade said, "but you're all karking legends. And I'm...not."

"Legends?" echoed Anakin bemusedly, and huffed a laugh. "You've obviously never seen every member of my family chew me out for doing something they thought was dumb."

"Yeah, they --" Anakin frowned. "Hey."

Cade arched up an eyebrow. "It's true and we both know it."

"We take calculated risks sometimes," Anakin argued.

Because even when he was backing himself into a corner he didn't act like he was doing it.

"What part of 'taking a single snub fighter and shooting one shot down a karking hole and poof, no Death Star' sounds like it would work?" Cade demanded.

"Well, it did work, didn't it?" Anakin insisted. Even though no, none of that sounded like it ought to.

"Well, yes, but it doesn't make it less of a karking stupid idea," Cade proclaimed.

Anakin bristled a bit. "Look, no one ever said what we did --" careful who you include in that 'we' there, Anakin -- "was safe."
