And then the pathways slammed shut.

Oh, not all of them. Most of them simply rearranged themselves. But whatever had connected each camp to another had been violently stripped away. They were alone now, and they were easy prey. At least the winds had settled down...

The maze had grown more erratic, however. Instead of speeding up time for all, it was now slowing it down at random in different places. Anyone caught in a sudden bubble of it would find themselves slowing down compared to the rest of the world. Awkward.

"Won't say no if we've got a shirt to spare. The bags are a little scratchy."

Dinah darted back to the pile of maternity clothes, and found a pair of jeggings that no one had been able to fit into made of cotton. "These should work." And were a bright purple-and-green floral pattern, for blending in to -- tropical forests, maybe. "Somebody was saying that there's keys to a door that might be the way out. We should probably look for that too."

Priestly started rewrapping his leg with the jeggings. Wow, they clashed with themselves, much less his pajama pants. "The keys, or the door? Those halls rearrange themselves all the time, from what I can tell. No way is any maze that complicated."

"I know, but what good are keys without it?" Dinah grimaced. "I was also thinking that phones, or walkie-talkies, or something so we can call people back here. I haven't run into anything close to that useful yet." She was quiet a minute, then said, "Some of those pits have to go somewhere, right?" Stupid ideas for the win!

"No," Priestly said, eyes going wide. "No! You are not going into any pits!"

Don't make him tie you down, Dinah.

"Not without rope! Or a way to get back. Or communicate. But what if-- what if the doors are all a trick? What if the only way out is through something without a door?" Dinah sighed and put her head down on her knees. "What if we open that other door with the keys, and it's just-- nothing?"

She'd had waaay too much time to think about this stuff lately. "I know there's no rush, but. People keep disappearing, Priestly." And it was freaking her out.

And if there was some kind of giant worm at the bottom of the pit waiting to eat people who tried to repel down -- Priestly could think of entirely too many different horrible things that could be in the pits. So, no, he wasn't going to let her try that. Maybe if someone else wanted to.

"Hey," he said, holding one arm out. "C'mere."

Dinah stared at him a moment, then crawled over to bury her face in his shoulder. "I don't like not having any clues. I don't like not knowing what I have to fight," she whispered, hanging onto him. "I know I'm not making sense, but I'm so scared we're going to miss something."

"Hey," Priestly said, giving her a firm hug. "We'll get out of this. We always find a way out. That's what Fandom does, bad stuff happens but we're all too awesome to stay down and we figure it out and it's all okay." He pulled back enough to try and look her in the eye. "Hell, we got out when the entire multiverse was disappearing. This dungeon's nothing."

He managed all that with a smile on his face, and he even mostly believed it. Fandom could do anything.

"We just got to stick it out together. Which means you don't get to disappear down some pit."

"Okay." Dinah closed her eyes, keeping back tears. She heaved a sigh. "Okay. Right. Keys. Door. And... a new plan after that, if that doesn't work, right?" She opened her eyes and smiled at him. "Better than disappearing. We can do this." Freaking-out time, over. Back to work. "Let's look for soap and drugs and booze and better clothes. And chocolate." Aim high!

"Oh man, booze." Priestly nodded. "Doubles as an antiseptic! And a painkiller!"

They definitely needed to find booze.
