The first day had been eminently entertaining - but the Toymaker was already growing bored. He reached in and tweaked the strings of his tiny universe, adding subtle changes: speeding up time, moving hallways. One of the two might be more noticeable than the other, but he looked forward to seeing if Fandom's finest felt the time discrepancy.

He split this day in two. Bound the pathways of the first and second camps together. And sat back.

The maze changed. That was what it was built to do. Its denizens would just have to find ways to cope with it.

No, surely not! That would be ridiculous!

"Vampires," Karla said wryly. "You remember my first summer here...?"

Yeah. She figured Dinah could fill in a lot of the rest.

Dinah stared at her a moment, then full-body shuddered. "Uuuuugh." She slid upward, biting her lip, then asking, "How bad is it? Can I see?"

Yes, Karla, you do seem that jumpy that she had to ask that carefully.

"I didn't get turned!" Karla snapped, hand to her neck. "Or killed. So however bad it is--" and, truth be told, Karla didn't know because she couldn't bring herself to check "--it's not as bad as it could be."

As bad as it nearly had been.

Dinah sat down on the edge of the alcove, and reached for Karla's hand. "I know. I believe you. You ate the food. You'd be way weirder if you got turned." Keeping her voice soothing and calm. "I just want to be sure it's not infected or still bleeding, hon."

Oh yeah. It was still bleeding. Or, well, oozing, sort of.

"I can't Heal it," Karla admitted softly. "I can't Heal anything."

She didn't actually make a move to show Dinah her injuries, but wouldn't move to stop her if she wanted to look.

Dinah peeled back the edge of Karla's collar, hissing through her teeth when she saw it, then said, "Yeah, that looks nasty. Not fun. I'm going to see if anyone has bandages, and get some water for it." She patted it back in place, then asked, voice even softer, "The eye looks bad too. Anything else?"

Well, that's sorta what happened when you gouged out the eye of the vampire who was feeding off of you. He didn't take a lot of care when detaching himself from your neck.

"Nothing physical," she said with a shaky laugh. "The other-you says hi."

"That bitch." Of all the bad guys Dinah hated, herself as a vampire was waaay at the top of the list. Possibly at the very top. "Oh, God. I am so sorry, Karla. So so sorry." Since OtherHer would never apologize for anything. "You hang tight. I'll be right back."

'Cause she needed a second to get it together, as well as grab one of those ripped-up pieces of bag, in order to clean up Karla's wounds. This was about Karla. Not her. Breathe.... and good!

She came back with another cup of water, and some burlap, and said, "There was a buffet. We stole the place settings too."

"If it helps, she was only the first vampire I met yesterday," Karla said tonelessly, tilting her head so Dinah could get to the wound. "And she left me relatively unscathed. But she's not any saner the second time around. So you have extra-nothing to apologize for."

Which would help, right? You know, up until Dinah met up with Priestly?

"Stole a buffet, huh? Down to the plates? Remind me never to use the good silver when you come to visit." She hissed as the rough burlap hit the sensitive skin. "Should have gone with you and...whoever."

"Sam," Dinah said, voice light and distracting as she dabbed at the bite. God, at least OtherHer hadn't gotten lucky. "I dunno. You might not have wanted to climb that cliff. Even though it did have a lot of hand-holds... and we had a rope, partway up. There was a guy at the top with a sword, waiting for someone. Not us. We had to do some fast talking." She carefully held the edges of the bite together, and pressed down. "Hold that there, okay? Think if I sacrificed a shoelace, it'd keep it steady?" Give Karla something else to think about for a minute or two.

"A shoelace is way too big to use for stitches. It would tear right through the skin," Karla said. "And not sanitary enough. We'd need to boil it first and even then it would still be too big. Our best bet is to put a pad over the whole thing and hope."

She thought about how she would have fared trying to climb a mountain--or even a rope--and sighed.

"I hate being worthless."

Come on, Karla. You bled blood, not emo.

"I meant to tie around your neck, and hold the padding on... but maybe that's not such a hot idea." Gah! She needed to re-take that First Aid course again, and soon. "...you are not worthless. At all. You know that. You just ran into somebody bigger, that's all. Two somebodies bigger." One of whom Karla still hadn't named yet. Dinah wasn't sure whether to push on that or not. "When you were tired and half-naked and alone. So we'll fix a few of those. And you'll be able to deal better. You got *away* from them. How is that even close to worthless?"
