The Vault, Somewhere, Sunday Morning

The vault door stood large and broad in the hallway - so large and broad that it was as if the corridor itself had had to grow several sizes to accommodate it. It was a dark red, and its surface was almost completely smooth but for the slots where three keys would fit.

It exuded quiet menace.

There definitely was something off about this door, but then that could've been said for all the doors the dungeon had seen this past week.

The three slots for the keys were plainly visible, and currently empty. They would not be for long.

Finally, something was happening. Kaidan wasn't sure if it was gonna be a good thing, exactly, but at least it was something. You know? Yeah.

He had a stick on him he'd been using as a makeshift weapon. Didn't match up to a rifle, but he'd deal.

Bay pulled the little a lot figure out of her pocket and held it up to the door, noting that it looked like it would fit. She still held her breath as she pushed it into place, fingers weirdly slippery with nerves.

It was a perfect match.

"So ... there's that."

With all of her acquired or stolen clothes, Jessica looked ready for... Well, not battle. Maybe opening her own thrift shop? Ranting about black helicopters as she fashioned her tin foil hat?

The fact that she had an unused blaster on her hip made the look slightly more dangerous, but mostly crazier.

Anyway, she was just waiting for something to happen at this point.

Seriously, get a big group together and open a vault that could hold anything in it? She totally expected Godzilla.

Because they'd faced Godzilla once.

Éponine wasn't here for a fight, or to try and help, but if something significant happened now that they had those keys, then she'd rather be close to the action in case this happened to be the way out, or, if things went badly, be able to use the rest of the crowd as a sort of shield.

Apparently getting out alive had become a priority. That was interesting.

Coulson had somehow gone the entire week without gaining a weapon. This didn't bother him. He was still seemingly prepared for whatever was going to happen now.

Surprise!

The vault door unlocked with a click as soon as the last key had found its way into its slot.

There was a brief silence.

Then something large and heavy rolled away inside. Something else clicked. And then a third click. Finally, the door seemed to break open neatly along the center... and then slid open.

Sending dozens of angry large clockwork spiders flooding into the corridors. Whoops.

Jessica learned her lesson with the knight yesterday. If she was going to use fire webbing on these spiders (... appropriate, BTW), it wouldn't do to just shoot them because then they would be angry large FLAMING clockwork spiders.

That's what Jessica started catching two or three at a time in fire web nets and then webbing the nets to the wall where they could melt or overheat or whatever happened when you burned clockwork spiders for a few minutes in intense heat..

She called on her biotics. And she received... a minor electric shock.

By this point she'd come down here with guns and a sword, and one of those would sound terrible killing these things. Ugh, fine, time to just randomly shoot at and explode them.

On second thought, that sounded cathartic.

Oh, Bo was on this.

Or at least she was on the ones small enough that she could stomp them or beat them to smithereens with her baseball bat.

She kind of preferred the stomping; it had that personal touch and it proved that with enough force behind them, even neon green bowling shoes had a point in existing.

Eric was pretty sure biting these wouldn't do anything, so he went with ripping their legs off and beating them to death with them.

"Shiiit!" That'd be Priestly backing off to let someone way more suited to fighting metal spider things handle things. He was injured and down an arm and not a fighter and --

Ohhhhh yeah, he had a weaponized tail.

So, that'd be Priestly backing off, and thwacking at mechanical spiders with his tail.

The reaction wouldn't stop Kitty from doing something about these things, though, and she actually confronted one, figuring that if phasing didn't break it, it was safe to stab with a letter opener without getting a shock. Of course, she forgot till the last second that she'd managed to phase twice in a week down here...

But when the spider twitched and fell over, Kitty raised her arms in victory with a "Yes!" and decided this might be kind of fun.

Ugh, spiders. Piper wasn't a fan, but these were things she could handle. At least her exploding power could.

It was still a bit wonky, but there was some life in it today. Full working power would have taken out dozens at a time. It only worked enough this time to take out maybe two.

Still, watching them explode was very satisfying.

..... not so tough that a really good whack didn't at least take out the legs so you could keep whacking them.

OK, Bel could handle this. Better than something trying to mess with his head again. He just hoped that his fireball wouldn't fizzle out like they had with the Source.

A Change of Weather

The door along the back wall disappeared suddenly in a flash of blinding light.

The dungeon began to rumble. The winds began to roar.

"BORED NOW," rang out a voice. "I WILL PLAY ANOTHER GAME... ANOTHER TIME!"

From the walls, statues broke loose: statues with angel wings and angel faces. Then people, people with fangs and people who were rotting and people who were grey and people who had lost it. Bounty hunters and knights fought for a place between the metal spiders and their other compatriots.

They were all angry. And they all wanted to kill.

Especially the emotional baggage. It was raining down from certain spots on the ceiling at a terrifying pace.

To say Atton was going unhinged would be understating a bit. He'd managed to grab a blade from somewhere a day ago: now he was tearing through anything that got too close to him.

If you were a Jedi - or even someone he didn't like so much - it was completely possible that you might wind up 'too close to him' accidentally.

The spiders? Had not really been Peter's scene. This? Was even less so.

He was holding onto a stick he'd snagged from one of the piles back at the camp anyway-- slinking backwards, dodging and weaving through the fray. If he made it back to the camp, he might have a shot at something defensible.

Which would probably last him about thirty seconds, but seriously, he was too young to die.

A Final Confrontation

Our intrepid sneakers were unaware of the pandemonium unfolding outside, because they were a bit preoccupied dealing with the guy responsible for it all...
